GoViral, my company. The brief

This is the brief of a study that I' m doing at the Copenhagen university with the course of Sociology of organizations. The topic is to describe your company (if u have one..) in a point of view sociologic and communicative.

From October 2006 I am working for GoViral (www.goviral.com). What is GoViral? It is an agency for viral marketing. What is viral marketing?


According to Wikipedia: “Viral marketing refers to marketing techniques that use pre-existing social networks, produce increases in brand awareness, through self-replicating viral processes, analogous to the spread of pathological and computer viruses. It can be word-of-mouth delivered or enhanced by the network effects of the Internet” (http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Computer_viruses) but it is also much more.


It can be used on internet sites, forums, uploading video sites such as You Tube and also on blogs because today, bloggers are the new opinion leaders till to arrive to the new border of virtual worlds as Secondlife.

The viralmarketing strategy is one of the last (maybe the last new one) of contemporary marketing strategies. The metaphor of the internet as a net is perfect for understanding how viralmarketing works. Absolutly not. Campaigns, videos and sites are viewed in viralmarketing as a virus which is spread around the net. Something illegal or dangerous? Absolutly not.

How does viralmarketing work? After planning a viral strategy of VM (viralmarketing), the seeders start to spread the virus in, for example, a video.


Who are the seeders? According to my company: “Seeders are the people who spread the campaign material. A good seeder is a person who continuously works on maintaining relations with a larger group of connection points on the internet. The seeder inspires online editors and influencers who control online connection points…A good seeder has great social skills, and is witty and persuasive” (http://www.goviral.com/seeder.php).


So, what is my job at GoViral? I am an Italian seeder. This means that I work for the Italian market but, being on the net interconnected with the entire world, my virus (spot, video etc.) will therefore also be watched around the world.

So; I am Italian and I am living in Copenhagen, I work for a Danish internet marketing company called GoViral, I work in the Italian market and most importantly, I usually work at home when I want, I have no timetable, only a deadline.

So, What’s happening?
This essay aims to analyze, starting with my agency GoViral, the old and the new kinds of organizations in society, how they work and how GoViral works. I shall utilise organization and communication theories, Marx’s concept of alienation and also Luhmann’s communication theory.

Speaking about viral marketing...
