One day before...

My style

I watch the jocks come outin the post pareda
and one will win the race, the others will lose
but each jock must win sometime in some race
on some day, and he must do it often enoug
or he is no longer jockey.

it's licke each of us sitting over a typewriter
tonight or tomorrow or next week or next month.
it's like the girls on the street tryng to score
for ther pimps
and they have to do it often enough
or they are no loger whores
and we have to do it often enough
or we're whores who can't score

I would like a little more kindness and warmth
in the structure of things

I became a writer but when I was a boy
I used t dream of becoming the village idiot,
I used to lie in the bed and imaginemyself that careless idiot,
planning ways to get food and ympathy easily,
a planned confusion of not too much love or
effort.

some would claim that I have succeeded
in this.

Guardo i fantini che riscaldano i cavalli
e uno solo vincerà la gara, gli altri perderanno
ma ogni fantino deve vincere qualche volta
o non farà più il fantino.

è come uno di noi davanti alla macchina da scrivere
stasera o domani o ra una settimana o il mese prossimo.
come le donne di strada che provano a venderla
per il loro magnaccia
e devono venderla abbastanza spesso
o non faranno più le donnacce
e anche noi dobbiamo farcela abbastanza spesso
o saremo puttane che non vendono

ma a me piacerebbe un pizzico in più di calore e gentilezza
in questo mondo.

sono diventato uno scrittore ma da ragazzo
avevo l'incubo di diventare lo scemo del villaggio,
giacevo al letto immaginandomi uno sconsiderato idiota,
che studia il modo di ottenere cibo e simpatia a buon mercato,
in un metodico miscuglio di troppo poco amore e sforzi
troppo scarsi.

qualcuno direbbe che è proprio questo che ho ottenuto
